How to Sand Plaster Smooth

How to Sand Plaster Smooth (Beginner Guide)

Sanding is what makes plaster repairs blend into the wall.
Do it right — and no one will ever know there was a repair.

1. Use the Right Grit

Best grits:

  • 180–240 for top coats

  • 120–150 for rough shaping (rarely needed)

Never use super-coarse grits — they leave scratches.

2. Use a Sanding Block or Pole Sander

This keeps the surface flat.
Hand sanding without support creates dents.

3. Sand in Light, Even Passes

Don’t push hard.
You’re polishing, not grinding.

4. Feather the Edges

Sand the edges wider to blend patch into wall.
Aim for a smooth transition area.

5. Avoid Over-Sanding

If you hit tape:

  • Stop

  • Reapply top coat

  • Let dry

  • Sand again lightly

6. Use a Bright Light

Shine a light sideways against the wall.
It reveals bumps, ridges, and low spots.

7. Wipe the Area Clean

Use a dry cloth or brush before painting.
