How to Pour a Small Concrete Slab

How to Pour a Small Concrete Slab for Beginners

Small slabs (1–10m²) are common beginner projects like aircon pads, bins, sheds, and patios.

Here’s the simplest way to do one safely.

1. Mark out the slab

Use spray paint or string lines.

2. Dig out the area

100mm depth is standard for small slabs.

3. Add a base

50–75mm of compacted road base or crushed rock.

4. Build and level your formwork

Use straight timber. Ensure corners are square.

5. Place the mesh

Use small plastic bar chairs to lift it correctly.

6. Pour your concrete

Work from one end to the other — pour evenly.

7. Screed the surface

Drag a straight screed board across the top.

8. Float & edge

For a smoother finish, use:

  • Bull float

  • Hand trowel

  • Edging tool

9. Let it cure

Cover with plastic for 24 hours.

Beginner Tip:

DON’T walk on the slab for at least 24 hours.
